Amazon Interview Experience India: SDE1 and SDE2 Round-by-Round

Amazon interview experiences shared by candidates in India follow a consistent pattern. The format is predictable. The difficulty is not. Most candidates who do not clear Amazon are not failing because they did not know the material. They are failing because they did not know what to expect in each round, how the Leadership Principles integrate into technical rounds, or what the Bar Raiser is actually looking for.

This guide compiles real Amazon interview experiences from candidates in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune for SDE1 and SDE2 roles. What each round looked like, what questions were asked, and what made the difference between a hire and a no hire.

The Amazon Interview Process in India: What to Expect

The full Amazon interview process for software engineering roles in India runs in stages. The timeline from application to offer typically ranges from 4 to 8 weeks.

Stage 1: The Online Assessment (OA)

The OA is the first gate. It runs on HackerRank or Amazon's internal platform and contains two DSA problems to be solved in 70 to 90 minutes, plus a behavioral section with work simulation scenarios based on Amazon's Leadership Principles. Both sections matter. Candidates who solve the coding problems perfectly but skip or rush through the behavioral section have been rejected at the OA stage.

The DSA difficulty is medium to medium-hard on LeetCode. Graphs, hash maps, sliding window, trees, and dynamic programming are the most frequently appearing topics. Candidates report that the problems often involve practical scenarios (designing a data structure for a shopping cart, processing a list of warehouse inventory items) rather than purely abstract algorithmic problems.

Stage 2: The Phone Screen

A 45 to 60 minute live coding interview with one Amazon engineer. One DSA problem, typically medium difficulty. One or two LP questions at the end. This is where many candidates discover that they have been preparing only for coding without preparing LP stories. Arrive at the phone screen with at least 5 STAR-format LP stories ready.

Stage 3: The Virtual Interview Process

Amazon's term for what other companies call the onsite. For SDE1 candidates, typically 3 rounds. For SDE2 candidates, 4 to 5 rounds. Each round is 60 minutes. All rounds are eliminatory. No round can be skipped or treated as a practice run.

SDE1 Amazon Interview Experience: Real Accounts

Account 1: Nov 2024 to Jan 2025, Offer Received

Application via Hiring Interest Form on November 1. OA link received November 2. Completed the OA on November 4 with 2 coding questions and 50 plus behavioral questions. Cleared. Interviews scheduled within 24 hours.

Technical Round 1: Senior Amazon engineer, 4 plus years experience. Two DSA problems. Both cleared with optimal solutions. LP questions followed. Interviewer confirmed hire signal.

Technical Round 2: Two interviewers on the panel, no introductions. Two more DSA problems. One problem required only an approach, not full code. LP questions followed.

Bar Raiser Round: Conducted by a Senior Development Manager with 7 plus years at Amazon. LP-focused. Deep follow-up on every story. Standard LP questions plus probes about AI usage in day-to-day work.

Offer received same evening. Timeline: 3 weeks from OA to offer.

Account 2: LeetCode Community, February 2025, Rejected in Round 4

OA in January 2025. Two medium-hard DSA problems, both solved optimally. Cleared.

Round 1: Two standard DSA questions. Cleared.

Round 2: Same day, 3 hours later. Two more DSA problems. Cleared.

Round 3: LP-focused round. No DSA. Standard LP questions answered confidently. Cleared.

Round 4 (Unexpected): A fourth round was added, unusual for SDE1. Another DSA round. Two problems. Rejected.

Key learning: Amazon can add rounds if the hiring committee needs more signal. The fourth round appearing after three strong rounds is not common but does happen. Being mentally prepared for additional rounds matters.

Common SDE1 DSA Questions Reported by Amazon India Candidates

Two Sum and Three Sum variants. Group Anagrams using hash maps. Merge Intervals. Maximum Subarray (Kadane's Algorithm). Number of Islands (BFS and DFS). LRU Cache implementation. Product of Array Except Self. Binary Tree Level Order Traversal. Rotting Oranges (BFS). Word Break using DP.

For system design at SDE1: parking lot design, URL shortener at small scale, vending machine design, and library management system. The expectation is structured thinking, basic data modelling, and API design awareness. Not distributed systems depth.

SDE2 Amazon Interview Experience: Real Accounts

Account 1: Substack Roundz, SDE2 L5, 4 Rounds, Rejected

Recruiter outreach. Coding test on Amazon's internal platform: 90 minutes, 2 coding problems (one medium, one extremely difficult) plus a system design simulation with 5 to 6 multiple choice decisions.

Round 1: 6 to 7 LP questions at the start, then one coding problem. LP-heavy even in the coding round.

Round 2: 4 LP questions, then one coding problem. Standard LP questions, structured responses with examples from past experience.

Round 3 (System Design): 4 to 5 LP questions at the start. System design problem. Designed a toll fare system using Kafka pipelines for real-time processing. Interviewer explicitly mentioned being impressed with the system design approach.

Round 4 (Low-Level Design): Designed a BookMyShow-style class diagram on an online whiteboard. Covered seat booking, user management, and payment flows using design patterns.

Rejected. Key observation: LP questions in every single round, 4 to 7 per round. LP questions cannot be treated as a warmup or cooldown.

Account 2: Substack Roundz, SDE2 L5, 5 Rounds, Rejected in Bar Raiser

Onsite at BLR office, face to face.

Round 1 (System Design): Taken by the Hiring Manager. First half LP and AI questions: how do you use AI in your day-to-day work. System design question: Personalized Auto Suggestion with Top-K trending and multi-language support.

Round 2 (DSA): Meeting Rooms III problem (LeetCode). LP questions followed.

Round 3 and 4: More DSA and LP.

Round 4 (Bar Raiser, Virtual): LP-only round. 6 LP questions. The Bar Raiser rejected despite strong performance in previous rounds.

Key observation from this candidate: "Bar raiser rounds are highly dependent on the individual interviewer. I have given mock rounds with different people at Amazon and always did well. This is where it went downhill for me. For some reason he was just not happy with my answers."

This is the honest reality of the Bar Raiser round. It is less predictable than coding and system design. Having genuinely deep, specific LP stories with 3 to 4 levels of follow-up prepared is the only reliable mitigation.

Common SDE2 System Design Questions from Amazon India Interviews

Design a personalized auto-suggestion system. Design Slack Messenger. Design a toll fare collection system. Design a URL shortener. Design an inventory management system. Design a notification service. Design a distributed rate limiter. Design a ride-sharing backend.

The SDE2 system design expectation is meaningfully higher than SDE1. Scalability, fault tolerance, and trade-off clarity are required, not optional. LP integration in system design rounds is standard: expect to spend 10 to 15 minutes on LP questions before the actual design begins.

The Bar Raiser: What Candidates Say

The Bar Raiser round is the most discussed and most feared part of the Amazon interview process. Here is what candidates who have been through it consistently report.

The Bar Raiser has seen your scorecard from all previous rounds. They know which LPs have been covered and which have not. They deliberately probe areas that other interviewers have not touched. Going into the Bar Raiser with LP stories prepared for all 16 principles, not just your strongest 5 to 6, is the difference between candidates who expected the questions and candidates who were caught off-guard.

The follow-up depth is more aggressive than in other rounds. A story about failing at something will be followed by "and what specifically changed in how you approached similar situations?" followed by "can you give me a more recent example?" followed by "how do you know that approach was actually better?" Stories that hold up to 4 levels of drilling are real stories. Stories that fall apart at the second follow-up are not.

The "I" versus "we" signal matters even more in the Bar Raiser round. The Bar Raiser is specifically trained to probe team contributions and extract your individual actions from collective outcomes.

AI questions are appearing in Bar Raiser rounds. "How do you use AI in your day-to-day work?" is a new addition that multiple SDE2 candidates in BLR report being asked. Have a genuine, specific answer.

What Separates Passes From Rejections in Amazon India Interviews

Based on aggregated candidate reports, these are the patterns that consistently appear in the accounts of candidates who received offers versus those who did not.

Passes treated every round as elimination. They did not save energy for the Bar Raiser. They brought full LP preparation and coding readiness to every single round because Amazon's process is fully eliminatory at every stage.

Passes had specific, deep LP stories. Not "we delivered a project under pressure" but "here is the specific decision I made, here is what I gave up to make it, here is what the outcome was, and here is what I would do differently." The specificity is what holds up under follow-up.

Rejections commonly happened because LP stories were generic or because the Bar Raiser disagreed with the depth of self-reflection in a failure story. Technical performance was often strong in the same interviews where LP signal failed.

Rejections at the coding stage happened because candidates solved problems in silence, could not pivot from a wrong approach publicly, or could not handle the LP questions that followed the coding without preparation.

How to Prepare for Amazon India Interviews Specifically

For the OA: Practice 75 to 100 Amazon-tagged LeetCode problems. The most common patterns: graphs, hash maps, sliding window, trees, DP, and linked lists. Do not skip the behavioral section. It is scored and matters.

For LP stories: Prepare 10 strong stories covering all 16 Leadership Principles. The LPs that appear most often in reported Amazon India interviews: Ownership, Customer Obsession, Deliver Results, Dive Deep, Have Backbone Disagree and Commit, Earn Trust, and Learn and Be Curious.

For the Bar Raiser: Practice your LP stories under conditions where someone asks 3 to 4 follow-up questions on each one without letting you off the hook. This is a specific skill and it develops only through practice with a real person.

For system design at SDE2: The customer-framing expectation is real. Connect every architectural decision to what the customer experiences. "I chose eventual consistency here because the user sees updated data within 2 seconds, which is acceptable for this use case" is stronger than the same technical statement without the user frame.

At Intervue.io, Amazon mock interviews are one-on-one with engineers who have been through real Amazon hiring rounds. The LP questions are integrated into every technical round, not separated into a single behavioral section, because that is how Amazon actually runs its interviews.

FAQs

How many rounds does Amazon SDE1 interview have in India? Typically 3 rounds in the virtual interview process, plus an OA and a phone screen. Two to three technical DSA rounds, one round focused on LP, and one Bar Raiser round. Some candidates report a fourth technical round being added if the hiring committee needs more signal.

How long does Amazon interview process take in India? 4 to 8 weeks from application to offer. OA to interview scheduling: 1 to 3 weeks. Interviews to offer decision: 5 to 10 business days after the final round.

Is system design asked in Amazon SDE1 interviews in India? Yes but at a lighter level than SDE2. SDE1 candidates face basic object-oriented design and simple system architecture questions (parking lot, URL shortener, vending machine). Distributed systems depth is not expected at SDE1.

What LP questions are asked most often in Amazon India interviews? "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision and what you did" (Have Backbone). "Describe a time you took ownership of something outside your role" (Ownership). "Tell me about your most significant failure" (Learn and Be Curious, Earn Trust). "Give an example of delivering results despite obstacles" (Deliver Results).

Can the Bar Raiser reject despite strong performance in other rounds? Yes. The Bar Raiser has independent veto power and evaluates whether you raise the overall bar of the team, not just whether you can do the job. Multiple candidates have reported being rejected by the Bar Raiser despite strong coding and system design signals in earlier rounds.
